By combining Mobile Information Server with Microsoft OutlookŪ Mobile Access, you can bring the power of the corporate intranet to the latest generation of mobile devices and securely gain access to your e-mail messages, contacts, calendars, and tasks. Mobile Information Server also works seamlessly with mobile controls and Web Forms. This way, you can create applications with a single user interface (UI) that you can view on different mobile devices in real time, wherever you happen to be.

Features:

Mobile-Enable the Enterprise:

Mobile Gateway Functionality
Mobile Information Server functions as a gateway, enabling secure, authenticated access to enterprise applications and data from mobile devices.
Notification Routing
Notifications can be securely routed from applications to mobile devices.
High Security
Support for security protocols such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), IP Security Protocol (IPSec), and virtual private network (VPN) solutions is included. Mobile Information Server can be placed in a perimeter network (a network between two other networks; also known as DMZ) and deployed in secure topologies.
Internet and Wireless Standards Support
Support for standards such as HTTP, HTTP-Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV), Secure Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and others provide interoperability with mobile devices and tight integration with existing applications and IT infrastructure.
Mobile Device Support
Supports Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) version 1.1 browser-equipped devices (including Phone.com browsers) for browser access. Notifications can be sent to any device capable of receiving Short Messaging Service (SMS) or to any SMTP addressable device.
Integration with Windows 2000
Mobile Information Server integrates with Microsoft Windows® 2000 and takes advantage of its Network Load Balancing and security. Mobile characteristics for users and the IT infrastructure can be managed with Windows 2000 Active Directory™ Extensions and an MMC snap-in.
International Support
Mobile Information Server can be used in global implementations, and it supports U.S. English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Mobile users can select their preferred menu language.
Enhanced Security
Administrators can implement either IPSec or SSL to secure the link between Mobile Information Server Enterprise Edition and Carrier Edition for secure push notifications to mobile devices. If are running Microsoft Mobile Explorer 3.0, your cellular phone can connect directly to your enterprise network through SSL, avoiding potential security risks at the WAP gateway.
Updated Deployment Topologies
Mobile Information Server uses Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 to augment the security of the mobile environment.
New Language Support
Mobile Information Server now supports U.S. English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and European Portuguese.

Outlook Mobile Access:

Out-of-the-Box Productivity
Outlook Mobile Access runs on Mobile Information Server and enables secure access to Microsoft Exchange mailboxes, calendars, tasks, and contacts, including the Global Address List (GAL), from your mobile devices.
Tight Integration with Exchange
Outlook Mobile Access works closely with Exchange to provide a seamless and simple UI for opening Exchange mailboxes, calendars, tasks, and contacts.
Rich Browsing from Mobile Devices
Outlook Mobile Access supports reading, composing, forwarding, and deleting e-mail messages; accepting new meetings; looking up contact information; and much more—all from a familiar UI on a mobile device.
Push Notifications
The Outlook Mobile Access User Personalization page works with Outlook Rules to send urgent e-mail messages, tasks, and other notifications to your mobile devices immediately.
Microsoft Server ActiveSync
ActiveSync® securely synchronizes e-mail messages, calendars, and contact information from Exchange 2000 Server to a Pocket PC 2002–based device over a wireless link.
Voice Call Option
Outlook Mobile Access notifications automatically append the sender's telephone number to the message. Users simply highlight the number and press the Send button on their cellular phones to get connected to a voice call.
Worldwide Support
Outlook Mobile Access can be used in global implementations. Users select a preferred time zone and a menu language of U.S. English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

Mobile Services and Solutions:

Mobile Web Forms, Mobile Controls, and Microsoft ASP.NET
Server-side mobile controls, along with Mobile Web Forms, intelligently format content for different devices from a single ASP.NET page. You can view a single UI on different mobile devices.
Mobile Information Server and Mobile Web Forms and Controls
Mobile Information Server provides secure infrastructure for accessing Mobile Web Forms running on ASP.NET. It functions as the mobile firewall for secure browsing and is the secure router for sending notifications from mobile applications.
Scalability and Performance
Mobile Information Server scales to accommodate large traffic volumes for both browsing and push notification with the addition of more servers.
Management Tools
The management tools are easy to install and add mobility features to existing tools, such as Windows 2000 Active Directory directory service and Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
Administration Tools
Administrators can grant new or existing users wireless access with the Enterprise Device Setup Wizard (a bulk-provisioning wizard) or let them configure their own accounts with the Web-based Mobile Information Server Personal Device Setup self-provisioning tool.
Updated Software Development Kit
The downloadable Software Development Kit (SDK) now includes a SOAP XML connector that developers can use to extend Microsoft BizTalk™ 2000 Server orchestration processes to mobile devices.
